West of Socorro, southwest of Magdalena, the San Mateo mountains contain part of the Cibola National Forest and two wilderness areas: Mount Withington (north end) and Apache Kid (south end). This is very rugged country, more the home of hunters and ranchers than tree huggers (like us).
